SUMMARY:High-Performance Statistical Computing: Building a Statistics Comm
 unity within Supercomputing
DESCRIPTION:Panel\n\nHigh-Performance Statistical Computing: Building a St
atistics Community within Supercomputing\n\nOstrouchov, Genton, Keyes, Mat
loff, Nychka...\n\nThe current state of statistics and supercomputing is t
hat the two communities are largely separate with little interaction. Ther
e is a confluence of developments that signals a timely need to foster mor
e interaction and to build a statistics community within supercomputing. T
hese developments include increased interest in explainable AI methods, ca
lls to address potential bias in AI systems, interest in fast randomized a
lgorithms for numerical computing and a need for greater accounting for un
certainty in predictions.\n\nThe panel will discuss some realities and bar
riers that may be responsible for the current situation and make recommend
ations on steps that can be taken to increase interaction and build a new
community. This is the first such panel at SC and we plan to form a simila
 r panel at CompStat or a similar statistics-centered conference.\n\nTag: N
