SUMMARY:Starfish: Metadata-Driven Lifecycle Management, Analytics and Orch
estration for File Systems and Object Stores at Scale
DESCRIPTION:Exhibitor Forum\n\nStarfish: Metadata-Driven Lifecycle Managem
ent, Analytics and Orchestration for File Systems and Object Stores at Sca
le\n\nFarmer, Galvin\n\nStarfish is a unique software application deliveri
ng a holistic approach to unstructured data management at scale. Starfish
is based on a simple paradigm that is incredibly versatile and powerful. W
e combine DISCOVERY with EXECUTION, enabling one to identify files that me
et very specific criteria and then doing anything to those files that can
be expressed in code. \n\nThe discovery component of Starfish is a data ca
talog for unstructured data. It indexes file systems and object stores, st
oring their metadata in an SQL database. Starfish uses a number of strateg
ies to scan and maintain the index on extremely large files systems, such
as those found in DOE labs, major universities, corporate R&D facilities,
hedge funds, etc. The catalog retains the file system history, tracking f
iles and directories that have moved or been deleted. It stores metadata i
n the form of tags and key-value pairs to enable more specific queries and
to keep track of operations performed on individual files. \n\nThe execu
tion portion of Starfish is a scale-out data mover and batch processor tha
t uses the output of a query as the input of a batch job. Starfish has bu
ilt-in commands for data movement, disposition, metadata extraction, hash
calculations and many other common operations. It also executes scripts w
ritten in any popular language. Jobs are automatically run in parallel ac
ross multiple threads and servers. \n\nStarfish is commonly for reporting
and analytics, archiving, backup, ROT cleanup, instrumentation workflows
and data curation workflows. The web portal allows individual users to par
ticipate in storage management.\n\nTag: Data Management, Extreme Scale Com
