SUMMARY:Expert Talk 1: Toward a Quantum Internet

 er\n\nA future quantum network will consist of quantum processors that are
  connected by quantum channels, just like conventional computers are wired
  up to form the Internet. In contrast to classical devices, however, the e
 ntanglement and non-local correlations available in a quantum-controlled s
 ystem facilitate novel fundamental tests of quantum theory. In addition, t
 hey enable numerous applications in distributed quantum information proces
 sing, quantum communication, and precision measurement. \n\nWhile pioneeri
 ng experiments have demonstrated the entanglement of two quantum nodes sep
 arated by up to 1.3 km, accessing the full potential of quantum networks r
 equires scaling of these prototypes to more nodes and larger distances. Th
 is is an outstanding challenge, posing high demands on qubit control fidel
 ity, qubit coherence time, and coupling efficiency between stationary and 
 flying qubits.\n\nI will summarize the state-of-the-art of the main physic
 al systems explored in this context - trapped atoms, defect centers in wid
 e-bandgap semiconductors, and rare-earth dopants. I will highlight open ch
 allenges as well as recent advances that open a realistic perspective towa
 rds the implementation of global-scale quantum networks.\n\nTag: Big Data,
