 – Creating Community, Building Careers, Addressing Challenges\n\nFerenbaug
 h, Gesing, Hettrick, Katz\n\nResearch software engineers (RSEs) are critic
 al to the impact of HPC, data science and the larger scientific community.
  They have existed for decades, though often not under that name. The past
  few years, however, have seen the development of the RSE concept, common 
 job titles and career paths, the creation of professional networks to conn
 ect RSEs and the emergence of RSE groups at universities, national laborat
 ories and industry.\n\nThis workshop will bring together RSEs and allies i
 nvolved in HPC, from all over the world, to grow the RSE community by esta
 blishing and strengthening professional networks of current RSEs and RSE l
 eaders. We’ll discuss current activities and plans of national RSE organiz
 ations, discuss needs of RSEs and RSE groups and write a report on ways RS
 E organizations can help address these issues. Most of the workshop will b
 e spent in interactive discussions, preceded by invited addresses and seve
